What is Dry Needling

Dry Needling is a soft tissue therapy used to help you recover faster between training or sport, as well as enable you to get back on track after trauma.

This soft tissue treatment targets myofascial trigger points of the body by inserting fine needles.

Soft Tissue Therapies work on the muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia throughout the body. It is a complementary treatment.

Soft Tissue Therapies stimulate healing and recovery, and sports massage is a popular modality for athletes of all levels to help them perform at their best.

Soft Tissue Therapies will aim to balance the length, tone and tension of muscles and tendons, which restores the correct position of the bones, increases blood flow and helps heal injuries.

When Can Dry Needling Be Used

Applications for Soft Tissue Therapies can include:

  • Pre Exercise - massage is an effective component of a warm up prior to exercise as it stimulates blood flow, bringing oxygenated blood and nutrients to the area to enhance performance.
  • Post Exercise - it can be used to bring nutrient and oxygen-rich blood to fatigued muscles, as well as flushing out waste products produced during exercise in the muscles, such as lactic acid. This can reduce delayed onset muscular soreness (doms), enabling you to feel fresher sooner so that you can get back to training hard.
  • Drainage of swelling, lymphedema - due to its blood-stimulating properties, sports massage is effective in reducing swelling, enhancing your recovery and mobility.
  • General loosen up - soft tissue therapy is great for loosening up tight or fatigued muscles, enhancing your flexibility and mobility so that you can feel great.
  • Relaxation - there is something very therapeutic about feeling your tight muscles release. feel your stresses slip away as you loosen up in what is a very relaxing experience.

Types Of Massage Treatments Available

We employ the following specific techniques:

  • Deep Tissue Massage - With deep tissue massage, firm and flowing strokes are applied to the problem areas of the body, which eases tension. The therapist may use their thumbs, knuckles, or elbows to achieve the appropriate direction, depth, or pressure.
  • Trigger Point Therapy - Trigger point therapy uses cycles of pressure and release (rest), and may be accompanied by deep breathing. This technique also helps to ease tension, and is often used in conjunction with deep tissue massage to achieve optimal results.
  • Stretch Therapy - In this type of massage, the therapist will assist the patient with stretching various areas of the body, which helps to relieve pain, enhance flexibility, improve range of motion, and improve circulation.
  • Joint Mobilisation - Joint mobilization therapy works by applying a low speed, passive movement of a joint, encouraging intracapsular movement, and improving stiffness and pain. It’s usually targeted at a specific problem joint.
  • Myofascial Release - Myofascial tissue is the fibrous connective tissue that supports and protects your muscles and bones. Myofascial release works by applying a specific, local stretch-based massage technique to knotted areas of the body, or other trigger points that help to relieve pain in the affected area.
  • Thermotherapy and Cryotherapy - Thermotherapy uses heated objects such as heat packs, hot water bottles, or hot baths to induce muscle relaxation, and promote blood flow. Cryotherapy uses cooled objects such as cold compresses, ice packs, or cold baths to decrease blood flow, which reduces inflammation and the risk of tissue damage.
  • Functional Release Cupping - placing cups on the skin under suction to affect the underlying connective tissue such as strong fascia to relieve pain, inflammation, and improve blood flow.
  • Complex Taping - as an alternative treatment for physical pain to apply directed pressure or support for an affected muscle.
  • Dry needling - also called intramuscular stimulation uses fine needles to stimulate and release trigger points in areas of knotted or hard muscle.
